To find a therapist who supports detransition, detransitioners recommend a three-step vetting process:
Use Psychology Today’s filters to exclude “transgender allied” or “gender affirming” specialties. Look for therapists who do not list “transgender” as a specialty or “Transgender Allied” in the Community section. Combine searches for “Online Therapy,” insurance coverage, and modalities like “Feminist” or specialties like “Lesbian.”
During the free consultation, explicitly state you need help with detransition and trauma treatment, not identity affirmation. Ask the therapist to disclose any conflicts of interest regarding gender identity affirmation. Ask directly about their approach to gender dysphoria—whether they will explore root causes or immediately affirm.
Be willing to trial-and-error several therapists until you find one who listens without pushing transition and is comfortable exploring alternative explanations for dysphoria.
